OUR STORY
The Story of Bwindi Local Woodcarvers Association Begins with Augustine Muhangi
Augustine Muhangi’s journey in gorilla carving began at 13. Growing up in Bwindi, Augustine would often play with clay soil from the riverbanks, creating pots and gorillas. His talent caught the attention of a man named Friday, who introduced him to wood carving in 2000.
Augustine spent a year learning wood carving in DR Congo, where he honed his skills alongside other artists. Upon his return to Bwindi, he continued creating art using clay and wood. His passion project, a large clay gorilla model, caught the attention of tourists and locals, leading to opportunities for sponsorship and advancement.
In 2003, Augustine was sponsored to study wood carving in Kampala, Uganda for a year. After completing his course, he returned to Bwindi, continued working on his craft and began teaching others.
The Story of Onesmus Rutaro
Onesmus Rutaro was born in 1999 in Bwindi. At three years old, Onesmus would visit Augustine's workshop, fascinated by gorilla carving.
Onesmus began helping Augustine with small tasks, cleaning and painting gorilla carvings. As he gained experience, Onesmus started creating his own artwork, including drawings and postcard art.
The Birth of Bwindi Local Wood Carvers Association
In 2018, Onesmus completed his ordinary level education but could not afford advanced level or college fees. He decided to concentrate on art. Onesmus came up with the idea to start a carving association to promote local artists and conserve wildlife through art.
Together with Augustine, they approached Everlist, another local artist, to join their initiative. The three artists founded the Bwindi Local Woodcarvers Association, a non-profit organization promoting local artists, conserving wildlife, and supporting education.
